Researchers from the IDONIAL Foundation have presented a groundbreaking study at the NanoSpain 2024 Conference, on the surface modification of galvanized steel using a bifunctional sol-gel coating based on SiOx and nickel nanowires. This new coating not only protects the substrate from harsh environmental factors but also significantly improves its tribological performance. The results show a reduction of up to 25% in the wear rate and friction coefficient compared to unmodified materials.

The silicon sol-gel matrix has been enriched with nickel nanowires, optimizing its functional properties. Researchers are now focusing on further studies to understand how the morphology of these nanostructures—particularly their length-to-diameter ratio—affects the coating's anti-wear characteristics.

This advancement promises to open new avenues for improving materials used in demanding environments, which could have a significant impact on various industrial applications.
